Agrigenomics is about more than wheat and cattle. Agriculture technically encompasses the breeding and maintenance of any species, for any reason, and so includes animals and plants grown for decoration or as pets. An emerging frontier in agrigenomics, then, is improving the breeding of dogs, cats, and other companion animals using modern scientific knowledge and next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques.
The need for highly consistent detection of informative genetic markers is critical for genetic trait detection.
